Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took a pretty good shot at President Joe Biden in a Friday night speech. While the president is in recovery from the COVID virus, DeSantis wished “the United States of America a speedy recovery” from his presidency.
DeSantis was speaking to 5,000 people at Turning Point USA Student Action Summit. He gave a fiery address that got the crowd riled up with cheers, applause, and even people jumping up and down.
The Florida governor said that Biden’s leadership was like “a deer in the headlights” who reads from a teleprompter, according to Fox News.
DeSantis is widely considered to be the second leading GOP candidate to make a run at the White House in 2024, just behind former President Donald Trump. And he took the opportunity with a crowd full of his people to lash out at Biden’s energy and immigration policies.
“He came in and cranked the printing presses, kneecapped American energy, and he also opened our southern border,” DeSantis said.
“And what we’ve seen in the last year and a half is the largest illegal migration into this country in the history of the United States of America. We have record human trafficking, we have record sex trafficking, and we have record drug trafficking.”
He followed these biting comments with a wish that Biden would have a speedy recovery from COVID.
“I must say he did test positive for COVID. And I want to on the behalf of the state of Florida wish President Biden a speedy recovery from COVID.”
But then DeSantis added: “And I also want to wish the United States of America a speedy recovery from Joe Biden.”
He used this as a Segway to talk about his state’s COVID-19 response and then he went right to the number of laws that have been passed in Florida focused on the “woke ideology.” He talked about the ban on critical race theory and the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill that bans discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools.
“We make sure in Florida, we do not use our tax dollars to teach our kids to hate this country or to hate each other on the basis of race,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis also went after other states like Oregon and Minnesota, which saw major riots in recent years.
The Florida governor is a Navy veteran. He believes that the prevalent “woke” ideology has “infected” many organizations including the military. He even quipped in his speech that the armed forces are more likely to talk about pronouns than they are winning wars.
DeSantis is expecting a “red wave” in 2022. But he did not even mention Trump’s name in his speech. Both men are in the spotlight for the GOP Party, but neither one is either attacking or encouraging the other’s chances.
DeSantis is up for reelection in 2022. His Democratic opponent has not been determined yet. The candidates likely to go against him are either Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried or Rep. Charlie Crist, D-Fla.
The candidates he might face in the GOP primary for president, other than Trump, are former Vice President Mike Pence, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, or former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Not one of these candidates has the political momentum that DeSantis has. Nor do they have the fighting spirit that the Florida Governor has. He got the crowd going this weekend by shouting, “We are just getting warmed up. I have only begun to fight. I’m standing my ground, walking the line all the way to the finish line, and I can tell you this: with your help, and everybody behind us, there is no doubt in my mind that come November, we are going to keep the state of Florida free.”
